February 15, 2007
Operations Update, March 20, 2007
Ottawa, February 15, 2007 - The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) revises its policies, rules, and procedures on a quarterly basis to respond to the demands of Registrants and potential Registrants, to better meet the needs of CIRA Certified Registrars, and to implement operational improvements.
Amendments to CIRA membership policies, rules and procedures
As a transparent and accountable organization, CIRA has embarked on a new process for Registrants to become CIRA members. On October 11, 2006, CIRA launched an initial paper-based process, that is used to authenticate the identity of new Registrants who wish to become CIRA members.
CIRA is currently developing a more customer-friendly online process. As part of implementing the new online process, a number of changes have been made to the CIRA membership policies, rules and procedures.
Updates to the legal documents, which become effective March 20, 2007, include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Requiring that members authenticate themselves with CIRA
- Defining “membership information” and “membership representative”
- More clearly defining the principle of “one individual, one vote”
- Not conferring membership to a Registrant until at least 7 days after the member has registered a domain name with CIRA
- Clarifying that members must have at least one dot-ca domain name registration
- Removing Registrar involvement in CIRA membership matters
- Allowing CIRA to change a Registrant’s registration information directly without involving their Registrar
- Requiring that members keep their membership information up-to-date at all times
